Zafar Bhatti, a Pakistani Christian pastor who spent more than 13 years in prison on a blasphemy charge widely regarded as false, died of cardiac arrest just three days after his acquittal and release. He was 62.
Zafar Bhatti, the founder of Jesus World Mission Church, was arrested in July 2012 in Rawalpindi after a local cleric accused him of sending blasphemous text messages an allegation he consistently denied. He was charged under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, which carry the death penalty and have long been criticized by human rights organizations for their misuse, particularly against religious minorities.
